Divorce: Prenups helpful for everyone, not just celebrities

Many couples in California and around the country opt to create a prenuptial agreement before entering into marriage. In most cases, these agreements deal with property division should a couple get a divorce. However, there is a trend in prenups and other relationship contracts to include a variety of stipulations other than those that address finances.

While there is a tendency to think that prenuptial agreements are solely for the wealthy, they can be useful for anyone, regardless of income level. Several issues included in agreements, such as lifestyle conditions or romantic needs, could apply to any couple. Marital experts believe that discussing these issues and putting them in writing can give relationships a better chance.

Most couples won't have the details of their prenups made public. However, the agreements of some celebrity couples are frequently publicized online for all to see. In some cases, there are stipulations included that may not be common for the average married couple.

For instance, Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have agreed that they will go on a weekly date and spend 100 minutes a week together away from their offices. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have included an infidelity clause that provides compensation if cheating occurs. Stipulations regarding substance abuse are present in the agreement between Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman. Lastly, Beyonce and Jay-Z have agreed to a certain monetary arrangement for each child the couple has together. The musical duo recently added a post-nuptial agreement that deals with trust funds and custody of their children.

Many California couples can benefit from having a prenuptial agreement. For those couples already married, post-nuptial agreements may be warranted. A California divorce attorney can assist an individual with all types of relationship contracts. A knowledgeable lawyer will work to achieve the best possible outcome for a client in the divorce proceedings.
